Bernese Mountain dogs originated in Switzerland. They
were bred as farm guard dogs and occasional draft dogs
or drovers. Their duties were to be the all-purpose
farmer's dog, very versatile and loyal. They are a hardy,
good-natured working breed that today is known for being
a faithful family companion. They have been called the
baby-sitters and this is so true! They are protective
yet loving with their human children. Their devotion
to their humans, I believe, is unmeasurable. Their desire
to please is as obvious as their beauty. They are one
of the four Swiss tri-color breeds known by the collective
name of Sennenhunds.
Bernese are the only one of the four with long coats.
It is one of the most enjoyable of the larger breeds.
As Bernese is easygoing, quiet-natured and affectionate.
They are great "Leaners" and will lean against
your legs and warm up to you. They are protective, yet
not aggressive or shy. Bernese need their people! They
will not do well if isolated from people and activity.
They are intelligent and quick learners. They use their
sense of humor by making you understand that they want
something more challenging to work on. They will always
surprise you with their witty ways and special spirits
that seem to make a day go smoother.
